15 Year Old Filipino-American New Jersey Resident, Kirby Asunto, Gives Back To The Community

(Kirby Asunto with Rev. Fr. Edgardo P. Jocson, Pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church in Linden, NJ)

Every up and coming singer remembers the first time they realized singing is their passion. For New Jersey based Kirby Asunto, it came when she was but four years old.

She first began to warble at the age of 2, even before she started to read!  At 4 years old, she came home from school and announced to her mother that she joined a singing contest at her school. During that time, she learned to sing various songs by listening to the music of Barney, an American children's television show character. Since then, Asunto joined the singing contest every year and also took voice lessons to fulfill her dreams of one day being a professional singer.

In 2006, Asunto, together with her family, migrated from the Philippines to the United States. Wanting to further her singing career, she joined singing competitions such as The Access Broadway. She was met with success by becoming the Regional and National champion.

She has earned high recognition in the Filipino-American communities in NJ, NY, CT and DC even in her tender age. In addition to performing at various events, she also has, under her belt, the grand champion of the Philippine Fiesta Grand Idol singing competition and a performance at one of the biggest Korean shows in the US. There is the added  highlight of having wowed the crowd in the New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs in Madison Square Garden in 2011.

Asunto is certainly on her way to achieving her calling.  Last year, she was voted as one of the most outstanding Filipino Americans in New York. Near and dear to her heart and an enormous acknowledgment of her talents and accomplishments, she got to sing the Philippine National Anthem at the Manny Pacquaio-Timothy Bradley boxing match held at MGM, Las Vegas Nevada which was watched by millions around the world.

Never resting on her laurels, she is performing a key role in the very first Philippine Opera in the East Coast. She plays Basilio, one of the lead characters in “ Noli Me Tangere: The Opera”. This is a landmark adaptation of the Philippines' National Hero, Jose Rizal that set to stage in New York on October 4, 5 and 6.

Admirably and due in large part to her upbringing, she also believes and has been practicing being a  philanthropist. As a way of giving back to the community, she performs at various benefit concerts all over the United States free of charge. Her hope and intent is to help the needy, inspire other children to follow their dreams and, one day, be able to open a Music School for talented kids.

A Linden resident, Asunto signed on her talents to be one of the featured artists  performing at a concert to benefit St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church and the Filipino American Legal Defense and Education Fund (FALDEF). This is to be held on Sunday, October 27, 2013  at St. Mary and Elizabeth Academy at 170 Hussa St. in Linden, NJ. Rev. Fr. Edgardo P. Jocson, previously of St. Michael's Church in Cranford, NJ,  is the new pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church in Linden, is instrumental in facilitating this worthy cause to materialize for the community.

The benefit concert highlights Ms. Lani Misalucha, a main stay in Vegas who has sang on stage with the likes of of Celine Dion and Josh Groban. The benefit concert starts at 3pm, doors open at 2pm.
